Autistic and Allistic

Download PDF for print.

Allistic is to autistic, what cis-gender is to trans-gender. It is tricky to find language that supports the idea of “different and equal,” but I think this is the best we have right now. I try to use language that I would use with race and sexual orientation and gender identity. I would like to see an umbrella word like “queer” but for neurotypes, instead of “neurodivergent,” because I wouldn’t like to call myself “race-divergent.” That is not a criticism of anyone who does use it. I would like to see our community grow in a direction where we don’t define ourselves by how different we are from allistics.
